Nevaeh Amyah Buchanan Investigation and Trial

Nevaeh's family still seeking answers in her death

Nevaeh's murder still weighs heavily on the minds of her relatives. No arrests have been made in the death of the 5-year-old girl, who was buried in a shallow grave near the River Raisin three months ago. Police have released no new information, and relatives say rumors have been running rampant in the absence of new leads.

Friends and family of the slain girl gathered Sunday at the Romanowski Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Westland to remember Nevaeh. They hoped to raise enough money to erect a memorial park bench and to start an annual scholarship fund for needy preschoolers in her hometown of Monroe.

$20,000 reward offered for information, arrest in Nevaeh murder

The FBI is offering up to $20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the abduction and murder of 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan.
While he would not say that the investigation has stalled, Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield did acknowledge that there have been fewer tips lately.
"They’ve slowed down considerably," Sheriff Crutchfield said. "It’s one of the more difficult investigations law enforcement can get involved with. It’s a very difficult investigation."
Almost three months have passed since the little girl was abducted from the Charlotte Arms apartment complex.
The sheriff said a task force still is operating and the FBI is still present in the county. He insisted investigators are not frustrated at the lack of major developments.

Nevaeh's relative says investigators looking at carpet sample

Monroe investigators are looking at a carpet sample taken from Nevaeh Buchanan's apartment after her autopsy showed carpet fibers were found under her fingernails. "The police told us they found carpet fibers," Nevaeh's second cousin told The Detroit news, confirming that investigators took carpet samples.

Nevaeh's autopsy also revealed the 5-year-old died from inhaling dirt, indicating she may have been buried alive. Two fisherman found Nevaeh's body -- covered in cement -- floating in the River Raisin 35 miles south of Detroit in June. She had been missing 10 days

Nevaeh Buchanan's murder will haunt community

Oakland County Sheriff and gubernatorial candidate Michael Bouchard says Nevaeh Buchanan's murder will likely haunt the Monroe community, family, and officers for the rest of their lives.

"It's something that will stick with you because it's just not something that's human to be able to do that to a young child," Bouchard told Paul W. Smith this morning on WJR AM-760.

Autopsy details released yesterday indicate that Navaeh died from inhaling dirt, meaning she may have been buried alive.

5-year-old Nevaeh may have been buried alive, autopsy results re

Nevaeh Buchanan — the 5-year-old Monroe girl who was kidnapped, killed, then buried on the banks of the River Raisin under a layer of concrete — might have been buried alive, results from an autopsy indicate.

The girl’s cause of death has been ruled asphyxiation; the manner, homicide, a source told the Free Press.

Nevaeh’s aunt, Diana Lawson, confirmed that the family had been told by police that the little girl might have been alive when she was placed in a shallow grave along the River Raisin in Raisinville Township.

“It’s the worst nightmare,” Lawson told the Free Press. “All we can do is take it one step at a time.”

Testing on the girl’s body, including her lungs, show that she died after inhaling dirt. Authorities previously reported that she had no outward signs of trauma — such as broken bones or other wounds — that illuminated how she died.

Nevaeh's family waits for justice, hopes for healing

Five weeks later, and Sherry Buchanan still doesn't know what to do with her hands during the time of night when her granddaughter, Nevaeh Buchanan, would be going to bed if she were still alive.

Why was an innocent 5-year-old kidnapped and slain? What kind of suffering did the little girl endure before her body was found June 4 in concrete along the River Raisin's shoreline? How could a monster so sick and twisted possibly remain at large in Monroe?

Those are questions that Buchanan family members internalize as they mourn. They yearn for psychological healing, but they can't envision the day it will come.

Since Nevaeh was laid to rest in Monroe's St. Joseph Cemetery a month ago tomorrow, devastated family members have been left with voids in their hearts and nothing but time on their hands.

Nothing new in the murder investigation

Police involved in the Nevaeh Buchanan murder investigation have been unusually tight-lipped and have released scant information since the 5-year-old girl's body was recovered nearly two weeks ago.
Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield has made it a point to be the sole provider of all official information released to the media. Even members of his department, including some who are ranked, have said they are not privy to any details of the case.
Jennifer Buchanan and her mother, Sherry Buchanan, said they do not know any details regarding who could have been involved or how Nevaeh died. They said police have released very little information about how the case is progressing. While they understand, not knowing is still frustrating.
"They're just not leaking anything out," Jennifer Buchanan said.
"But I don't want to feel like I'm standing in their way. I don't want them to make no mistakes."
Sheriff Crutchfield said police have been in contact with the family members as recently as Friday.
"The medical examiner's office has not issued a cause of death yet," the sheriff said through e-mail. "As stated earlier, there was no apparent trauma to the body. Toxicology results are still pending."

Nevaeh's mom disputes rumors

Monroe -- Jennifer Buchanan has felt love and support from relatives and neighbors after her daughter's murder -- but she admitted Thursday she senses the suspicion and has heard whispers from those who speculate she knows more than she's telling. And, she said, it's starting to get to her.

"I realize some people think I had something to do with it," Buchanan said Thursday, referring to the slaying of her 5-year-old daughter, Nevaeh, who disappeared May 24 from her apartment complex. That set off a massive, weeks-long manhunt until the girl's body was discovered in early June by two fishermen in a shallow grave beneath a slab of concrete on the bank of the River Raisin.

"I hear the rumors," Buchanan said. "I hear what people are saying. But none of it's true."

Police on Thursday announced no new leads in the case. Buchanan said the lack of progress in the investigation is wearying.

"It's just very frustrating; I've got all these emotions running through me," she said. "They could still be out there, whoever did this. I could have shook their hand; they could have showed up at the vigil. That keeps me up at night, not knowing who did this.

Family of Missing Michigan Girl Wait for Autopsy Results

MONROE, Mich. —  The family of missing 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan is waiting for the results of an autopsy to determine if the body found by a southeastern Michigan river last week is that of the little girl.

Authorities said Monday the identification hinges on DNA results, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The child's remains were discovered Thursday next to the River Raisin. Clothes found on the body matched those Buchanan was wearing when she was reported missing on May 24.

On Friday, authorities said the body found encased in cement by a fishermen belongs to a child the same size, gender and age of the missing girl and they had "reasonable suspicion" it is her.

A pathologist told the Free Press Monday that determining the cause of death may be difficult, especially if reports saying there were no gunshots, stab wounds or broken bones are true.

Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield said results from the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office have not been received. He added that analysis results of the evidence recovered at the gravesite also are pending.

Nevaeh's mom says she has not given up hope

MONROE (WTOL) - 5 year-old Nevaeh Buchanan disappeared from the Charlotte Arms apartments in Monroe two weeks ago.

Investigators say they are almost certain the body recovered Thursday is Nevaeh. Family members expect to find out for sure Monday or Tuesday.

An autopsy was done Friday but the results have not been released.

Nevaeh's mother Jennifer Buchanan, who no longer wants her face shown on TV, told a Detroit TV station she is still hoping its not her daughter. "I still have hope. There is no indefinite, like, confirmation, as to if it is her or not. Some one could have took her. Somebody... I'm completely clueless, I don't know as to who, I don't want to point fingers at anyone."

'Person of interest' becomes scarlet letter

George Kennedy has not been charged in connection in the disappearance or slaying of Nevaeh Buchanan.

Neither has James Easter. Nor Roy Lee Smith.

Although none faces charges related to the crime, each was labeled a "person of interest" and suspicions of guilt have been firmly attached.

Two weeks after the 5-year-old girl was last seen outside her Monroe apartment building, an extensive search concluded Thursday, when fishermen discovered a body believed to be that of the Monroe girl in a shallow grave near the River Raisin.

Amid suspicion and public scorn, Jennifer Buchanan denies killin

In a cramped apartment, a portrait of a little girl is propped up on an old TV set, framed by candles.

It is a darling picture, taken at preschool.

Jennifer Buchanan faces the makeshift memorial, saying she can't imagine why anyone would have taken Nevaeh Buchanan, her 5-year-old daughter.

She begins to tell the story of the final moments when, she says, she thought Nevaeh went off to play with a friend.

And then was gone.

It's a story Buchanan has not told in so much detail before. And it's a story investigators are still scrutinizing.

Nevaeh's disappearance, for now, remains a mystery -- two weeks after she was last seen outside her Monroe apartment, just three days after a body, whose identity still is unconfirmed, was found encased in a concrete grave along a riverbank.

The search continues for the person who could have done this to a pretty girl who loved trucks and motorcycles, crayons and macaroni and cheese.

A girl whose life may have ended three days after she raced across a stage and -- all smiles -- grabbed her preschool certificate.

'Reasonable suspicion' body is Nevaeh

MONROE, Mich. - Authorities have a "reasonable suspicion" that a child's body buried on the banks of the River Raisin is that of Nevaeh Buchanan, who disappeared May 24 from her apartment complex in Monroe, Mich.

Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield held a news conference Friday morning on the status of the body found near the banks for the river in Raisinville Township at around 3 p.m. Thursday (WATCH the news conference in full) .

Sheriff Crutchfield stated that there is "reasonable suspicion" that the body is that of the missing 5-year-old, who was last seen nearly two weeks ago playing in the parking lot of the Charlotte Arms Apartments. The body recovered matches the age, size, and sex of her description.

A shirt was also discovered that matches the one that Nevaeh was wearing the day she disappeared. The sheriff said the body didn't appear to be injured.

The body was found by two fisherman, a father and son. Ryan Bickley, 15, told The Associated Press that his father, Guy Bickley, 51, discovered the body encased in cement Thursday morning while fishing the River Raisin.

Nevaeh memorial signs reflect anger

The makeshift memorial outside 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan's apartment has grown since the discovery of a little girl's body Thursday -- and the message has turned political.

"Capital punishment," read signs taped to the tent that protects dozens of stuffed animals, cards, balloons and candles near Nevaeh's front door.

"Majority of this country has it, Michigan needs to have it and they should start with the person(s) responsible for this tragic loss.

"Why should this person be allowed to live?" the flyers conclude.

While the body found along the River Raisin has yet to be positively identified as Nevaeh, word that it's likely the girl who's been missing since May 24 has stirred anger and anguish throughout the rural communities that surround Monroe.

Nevaeh Buchanan Murder Update

Nevaeh Buchanan Murder Update: Neveah Buchanan's body was found a just days ago and two men have already been arrested in an ongoing investigation of the greusom crime against a child. George Kennedy appears to be the prime suspect in the case, but no evidence has directly implicated him in the crime at this time.

Kennedy, a former prison inmate and registered sex offender is said to have been a “father figure” to the young girl”
"George had a good relationship upon my daughter as a father figure, always there for her.

If he came around she'd see him she'd run up to him and hug him," Jennifer Buchanan told MyFOXDetroit during an interview this morning.

Jennifer had dated George for some time, before cutting off the relationship but remaining friends and neighbors.

Monroe County Sheriff Tilman L. Crutchfield issued a news release Friday night with the following update on the Nevaeh Buchanan case.
"The Nevaeh Buchanan Task Force has received PRELIMINARY DNA results on blood evidence submitted to the Michigan State Police Crime Laboratory on the person of interest, George Kennedy.
"The DNA recovered from the evidence FAILED to match that of Nevaeh Buchanan."
The DNA results are from blood-stained items, such as clothing and a multi-purpose tool, that were recovered from Mr. Kennedy’s motel room and van.
Mr. Kennedy, 39, and Roy L. Smith, 48, both registered sex offenders, are or were friends of Nevaeh’s mother, Jennifer Buchanan, 24, who served time in prison for burglary.
Mr. Kennedy served time for sexually assaulting a Newport teen several years ago and Mr. Smith was released from prison in 2008 after serving 15 years in prison on a conviction of criminal sexual conduct, third degree, and other charges, such as larceny and breaking and entering.

At about 5 p.m. that day, the grandmother and granddaughter made several purchases at a store.  While waiting in line, the FBI said that the grandmother acknowledged that she had a conversation with a customer and the store clerk where she mentioned her granddaughter's name as being Nevaeh.

2nd sex offender linked to search for 5-year-old Nevaeh

Investigators in Monroe have another person of interest in the case of missing 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan, the owner of the van driven by her mother's boyfriend -- and a convicted sex offender himself.

Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan said today that Roy Smith, 48, of Monroe, another friend of Nevaeh’s mother, has been sitting in the Monroe County Jail since Monday while the agency decides whether he violated his parole.

Smith was convicted of third-degree criminal sexual conduct after a woman claimed he raped her twice on May 12, 1991, in his car at Sterling State Park and along a lane near Colf and Timbers roads in Monroe County’s Exeter Township, according to court records.

Sentenced as a habitual offender, Smith was ordered to serve 15 to 50 years in prison. Let out of prison in February 2008 after serving time for third-degree criminal sexual conduct, Smith apparently owned the van driven by George Kennedy, a registered sex offender and boyfriend of Nevaeh’s mother. Marlan today would not discuss the allegations that led Smith back to a cell.

Ten more FBI agents are canvassing Nevaeh Buchanan's 180-unit apartment complex in Monroe for clues to what happened to the girl, police said today at a late morning press conference.

"We are hopeful she is still alive," Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield said. "We have no indication that she is not still alive."

Crutchfield said Roy Smith, a convicted sex offender, is the second person of interest investigators have identified. Smith, who is not in police custody, is an associate of Nevaeh's 24-year-old mother Jennifer Buchanan, police said.

George Kennedy, who Buchanan's relatives and police said is her boyfriend, is also a person of interest, Crutchfield said. State Department of Corrections online records list Kennedy as a convicted sex offender. Police are holding Kennedy on an unspecified parole violation.

But Crutchfield warned against jumping to conclusions about Kennedy's involvement after children told authorities they saw Nevaeh go into a wooded area with Kennedy and was stabbed, according to a search warrant obtained by The Detroit News.

"We should not be focusing entirely on George Kennedy," Crutchfield said. "He is strictly that ... a person of interest. We continue to stress the focus is not on persons of interest. We don't want the public to become myopic with George Kennedy."

Edward Hanko, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI's Detroit office, also said people should not assume Kennedy had something to do with Nevaeh's disappearance.

"It is always easy to rush to judgment," he said.

Police have searched a 1993 GMC van owned by Smith and sent a silver multi-tool found in the van's unlocked glove box for lab testing. The tool had human blood on it, according to preliminary tests performed by the Michigan State Police, according to the search warrant's affidavit.

Investigators also searched Kennedy's hotel room, armed with a search warrant obtained after two young children said they saw Nevaeh go into the woods, where she "was kidnapped by a bad man" and was stabbed in the stomach, according to the warrant.

One of the children who said she witnessed the incident said she "tried to help" but could not after seeing Nevaeh going "into the woods ... to meet 'Daddy George.' "

According to the documents, police who searched the hotel room found blood stains on the wall above the sink and bathroom, shorts and a towel with blood stains, hairs on the toilet and bathroom floor and photos of a white female similar to Nevaeh.

Investigators also took sheets, pillowcases, a mattress pad and a comforter from the room as evidence.

A 100-person task force has been formed and has searched the area around the Buchanans' apartment complex, quarries and other areas for the girl. Crutchfield said the search is costly, but needed.

"It is expensive, but you can't put a price on human life," he said.

Amber Alert: News 11 obtains disturbing search warrant

MONROE, Mich (WTOL) - WTOL has obtained a search warrant in the case of missing 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan.

Motel room

This is the search warrant for the room at the Motel 7 where George Kennedy was staying for the past month. According to the mother of Nevaeh, Kennedy is her ex-boyfriend. News 11 uncovered earlier this week that Kennedy is a registered sex offender.

According to the search warrant, shorts and a towel were found with blood on them. In addition, there was blood staining on the wall above the bathroom sink in the hotel room. Property was searched and some was seized from the room. The Monroe County sheriff has named Kennedy a person of interest.

Vehicle search

The warrant also covered a search of a vehicle believed to be driven by Kennedy. In the center console of the van, a JVC radio face case was found to have "contained a silver multi-tool, which appeared to have blood on the exterior." A preliminary examination confirmed the blood found to be human.

Playmate interviews

Two children, a boy and a girl, believed to be playing with Nevaeh on Sunday were questioned. Below are just a couple details of that interview.

According to details in the search warrant, the girl reported seeing Neveah go into the woods to meet "Daddy George."

The boy said Nevaeh was kidnapped by a "bad man" and that the bad man stabbed her in the stomach. A forensic interviewer said the boy was unable to convey that he actually witnessed the events. It is possible this could be due to trauma.

Polygraph test

One last detail we learned today is that George Kennedy failed a polygraph test.

Kennedy has been named a person of interest by the Monroe County sheriff. He remains in custody on a parole violation

neveah

I feel like George took her and then hurt her and didnt know what to do except for hide her. They found blood stained clothing and hair and those tiny motorcycles in his apt. The detectives checked the quarry but I think if he was going to hide her, he wouldnt do this across the street, he'd drive somewhere unpopulated. Rasin River is close and also there are fields by bridge overpasses down past clamdiggers and by visteon. for all we know he could of put her in an abandon house or if she is deceased in a sewer. I hate to think this way but if this guy is psycho then maybe we need to think like him. Another question is why would he cut her hair, unless he did it to disquise her or just to torment. If she was last seen in the woods I hope they looked for his tire tracks nearby. I hope they check every area of Monroe out and dig deeper into Georges phone contacts and financial doings and also besides dna, FINGERPRINTS should be somewhere by the sink where the blood was and you would think they could match them up from something of hers at the mothers apt. If it is George this should not take days to figure out. I think I may try to help tomorrow searching for her.

Neveah

I think the mother knows what happend she should be in jail why would you have a sex offender around your little girl. The mother is just as sick as the sex offenders the cops need to get off there ass and figure out something. I have helped for neveah in the carlton area and monroe area. The cops could ask more questions in the lie detector test and get answers because no one knows if neveah is alive or died and if she alive no one knows if she has food or even if she safe i feel really bad for neveahs family the only one that i dont feel sorry for is the mother the mother needs to go to jail for life

Nevaeh

I feel the same way about the mother of this sweet child, how can a mother not watch over her own baby.
Why would any mother want to put her child in danger like that, I just don't understand. That poor child. I agree the mother is just as sick as the person or persons that hurt that little girl. How sick is our world when a child can't even count on a mother to take care and love them.
