Father of Missing Girl Denies Part in Pair's Disappearance

WINTER HAVEN | The father of missing 3 1/2-year-old Masaraha Ross said he had nothing to do with the disappearance of his daughter or her mother.

Masaraha and her 29-year-old mother, Ronkeya Holmes, have been missing since October, and Lester Ross may have been the last person to see the two.

(...)

Lester Ross said he hired an Orlando lawyer who is using a private investigator to help with the search, but he hasn't received any updates.

"I just think that she doesn't want to be bothered," Lester Ross said. "I just want them to surface so then I can just be done with pretty much her family."

Winter Haven detectives have the assistance of a special agent from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement who is working full time on the case.

Winter Haven investigators say they have tried to interview Lester Ross again and said they have had a hard getting a response from him. The last time investigators spoke with him was Oct. 29, said Winter Haven Detective Amity McGee.

But Lester Ross said he's always been accessible and is still living in his Winter Haven residence.

"I took seven individual lie-detector tests," Lester Ross said. "I told them everything I knew."

Mother and daughter considered endangered and missing

Masaraha Ross lives in Savannah, Georgia, with her mother, Ronkeya Holmes, but had been staying with her father, Lester Ross, in Winter Haven. Holmes had come to pick up her daughter after the visit.

It was arranged that Ronkeya would collect Masaraha from her father at Wal-Mart in Haines City on the 18th October. Authorities reviewed surveillance tapes from Wal-Mart but didn't glean any information from them due to the quality of the video.

October 18th - At 10:52 p.m., Joseph Wilcox, 34 of Winter Haven, was stopped by Lake Mary Police while driving a 1992 Ford Escort driven to Florida by Holmes. Wilcox was arrested on unrelated charges and the vehicle was impounded.

October 20th - Ronkeya's sister, Nafateria Fletcher of Alma, Georgia, had a phone conversation with her. She states that Ronkeya told her that her car had been towed when Wilcox was stopped by police and arrested. Ronkeya would not say where she was and that she had Masaraha with her. Ronkeya  also told her that she would "take care of everything.

October 23rd - Fletcher filed a missing report with the Winter Haven Police Department.

When interviewed, Lester Ross stated that he last saw Ronkeya and his daughter on October 18th, when he handed Masaraha over to Holmes at the Haines City Wal-Mart. He states that he has not seen or heard from either of them since.

Investigations are being carried out by Winter Haven Police Department, Haines City Police Department, Lake Mary Police Department, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Anyone who has had contact with Masaraha and Holmes in the past two weeks is asked to call Detective Amity McGee at 863-291-5312. or anonymously and be eligible for a cash reward to Polk County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS.

Mystery surrounds disappearance of Masaraha Ross

Ronkeya Holmes came to Winter Haven on October 14th 2009 to try to pick up Masaraha from Lester Ross, 31, who is her ex-boyfriend and Masaraha's father. When Ronkeya's mother and sister came down from Savannah in Georgia to find Ronkeya without success they reported her missing to Winter Haven police on the October 23rd.

On October 19th, Lester Ross' cousin, Joseph Wilcox, 34, of Winter Haven, was stopped and arrested east of Orlando in Lake Mary while driving Ronkeya Holmes' 1992 baby-blue Ford Escort. None of his arrest charges relate to the Holmes case.

Winter Haven police say they have not found any evidence that a crime has been committed involving Holmes and her daughter, but they are concerned as there are a lot of inconsistencies in statements given by Ronkeya's family and Lester Ross.

Ronkeya's sister, Nafateria Fletcher, said Ronkeya told her on October 18th that she was meeting Ross at the Haines City Walmart to pick up her daughter.

Two days later, Nafateria heard from Ronkeya that she had been stopped by police and needed paperwork about her Escort. That was the last the family heard from her. A few days later, Fletcher said she received a call from her sister's cell phone but no one said anything. Then she received another from the phone, and this time an unidentified woman asked for the paperwork on the vehicle, but when Fletcher asked to speak to her sister, the woman hung up.

Nafateria Fletcher said she and her mother met with Winter Haven Police on October 23rd and told them what had happened.

That same day, Winter Haven detectives interviewed Ross, who told them he last saw Ronkeya and his daughter when he met them October 18th at the Haines City Walmart and handed Masaraha over to her mother.
