Thinking of Madeleine - 1000 Days Missing

May all the lanterns light the way home for you tonight Madeleine

Hunt for missing Madeleine McCann reaches 1000th day

Missing blonde-haired toddler Madeleine McCann was separated from her parents 1000 days ago.

Her cherubic face is recognised around the globe, and parents Kate and Gerry urge the public to keep the hunt for three-year-old Madeleine, who would now be aged 6, at the forefront of their minds.

Little Maddie was allegedly snatched from an apartment in the Ocean Club resort in the Portuguese village of Praia da Luz, on 3rd May 2007, as her parents dined with friends at a nearby tapas restaurant.

Dr McCann, 40, and his Liverpool-born husband Kate, 41, have never given up hope of finding their daughter.

To raise further awareness, and mark this unwanted anniversary, 1,000 lanterns will be released at locations across the UK by friends, family and supporters of the McCanns at 7.30pm this evening.

Writer and poet Simon Armitage has written a touching verse to mark 1,000 days since the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

The Beacon

Dusk, doubt, the growing depth of an evening sky,
dark setting in as it did that night,
the forever vastness of outer space
reflecting the emptiness here inside,
shadowing, colouring, clouding the mind.

But somewhere out there there has to be life,
the distance only a matter of time,
a world like our own, its markings and shades
as uniquely formed as a daughter’s eye,
distinctly flecked, undeniably hers,
looking back this way through the miles and years

to a lantern cupping a golden blaze,
its candle alive with a fierce blonde flame
for the thousandth time, for as long as it takes.

Lanterns to mark missing Madeleine's 1,000 days

A thousand lanterns will be released into the sky this week in the U.K, Portugal and the U.S.A to mark the number of days little Madeleine McCann has been missing.

Supporters will release the lights at 7.30pm on Wednesday, January 27, 2010.

At the same time, the girl's parents Kate and Gerry will host a star-studded gala dinner in Kensington, West London, to raise funds for the search.

Maddie was three when she vanished on May 3, 2007. Her parents' spokesman said: "They never, ever thought they would reach 1,000 days without their daughter."

Madeleine Mccann: Kidnap ring link

A GIRL who vanished just a few miles from where Madeleine McCann disappeared was sold to child traffickers, a Portuguese court will be told next week.

Joana Cipriano was just eight when she vanished on September 12, 2004, from the village of Figueira, near Portimao in the Algarve.

Her mother Leonor and uncle Joao Cipriano were jailed for 16 years for her murder. But Leonor, who is fighting to overturn her conviction, will put her case to a Portuguese court this week

Her sensational allegations raise the possibility that a child smuggling ring was active in the area and could have also snatched Madeleine from her apartment in Praia da Luz on May 2007.

Madeleine's parents return to Portugal

Every day Madeleine and her family are in my thoughts and prayers. May their strength and sheer determination never leave them as they leave no stone unturned.

From Kate Hughes Scotland.

Madeleine McCann's parents in Christmas 'heartbreak'

The parents of Madeleine McCann have released two new photographs of their missing daughter's last Christmas at home, on their website.

Kate and Gerry McCann said it was "heartbreaking" to face a third Christmas without Madeleine, who was nearly four when she went missing.

The new pictures show Madeleine playing with sister Amelie months before she vanished from an Algarve flat in 2007.

The McCanns, of Rothley, Leicestershire, are still searching.

'Great disappointment'

On their website the couple, both 41, posted a statement reading: "It is heartbreaking for our family to accept the likelihood of spending a third Christmas without Madeleine.

"Her absence is even more tangible at this time of year."

They added they felt "great disappointment" that their high-profile search had failed to find Madeleine, but added they had "no option" but to continue.

Madeleine McCann's parents make emotional visit to Luz

The pair had wanted to return to Praia da Luz in southern Portugal for some time, Kate McCann said. "I have longed to come back here for personal and emotional reasons," she wrote in an update on the findmadeleine website on Saturday afternoon.

"Although our pain feels much rawer here, it is comforting at the same time since we feel closer to Madeleine."

On Saturday night they made their second visit of the day to the village's tiny church where they had sought comfort in the days, weeks and months following the disappearance of their oldest child, shortly before her fourth birthday.

It was the first trip back for Mrs McCann, 41, since the family left the resort in September 2007, three and a half months after her daughter disappeared from a holiday apartment while her parents dined with friends in a local tapas restaurant.

McCanns In Portugal For Cop Libel Action

Madeleine McCann's parents are flying to Portugal for the start of their libel action against former Portuguese police officer Goncalo Amaral.

Kate and Gerry McCann are planning to attend the opening of the hearing in Lisbon on Friday, their spokesman Clarence Mitchell said.

He added: "They only intend to appear at the opening and I would expect that they will return to the UK fairly swiftly."

(...)

In his book, The Truth Of The Lie, he claimed Madeleine was dead and questioned the McCanns' account that she was taken while they were eating with friends.

In September a Portuguese judge granted an injunction banning further sale or publication of the book.

It also banned Mr Amaral from repeating his claims about Madeleine or her family. They are now trying to get the ban made permanent.

(...)

Speaking after it was granted, Gerry McCann, from Rothley, Leics, said the allegations had done immense harm to the search for their daughter.

Madeleine suspect 'can't speak'

THE former Blackpool soldier and convicted paedophile wanted in connection with the disappearance of Madeleine McCann can no longer speak, his lawyer claims.

Raymond Hewlett has a long record of sex attacks on young girls and is wanted by police in Britain for offences dating back more than 30 years.

Private investigators working with the McCann family also want to question him.

(...)

But he has so far refused to co-operate with the team – and has no legal obligation to do so.

And, his lawyer claims, even if he wanted to talk to the McCann investigators, he would be unable to speak due to throat cancer.

My talent will help hunt for Madeleine McCann

A MUSICIAN hopes to win Britain’s Got Talent with a score he is dedicating to missing Madeleine McCann.

Piano player Brian Davies, 59, of Old Chester Road, Helsby, who says he has never had a music lesson in his life, has written an instrumental piece – entitled Forget Me Not – which he hopes will help raise awareness of the Find Madeleine campaign.

“It’s my skill and I want to help the cause in the best way I can,” said Brian, an executive director of two Deeside based businesses.

“It’s a gift, I play by ear. I just go to the keyboard and play, it works the same hearing thing on the radio, but I compose my own music.”

Find Madeleine Website Update

Earlier this week, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection centre (CEOP) launched a special message, an appeal, to the person who knows or strongly suspects who was involved in Madeleine’s abduction. The aim of this initiative was (and still is) to prick the conscience of that person who knows and prompt them to come forward with that key piece of information which could lead to Madeleine coming home. The more people we can reach worldwide with this message, the greater the chance of us reaching that person who knows. And the more times this message reaches that person, the greater the chance of them doing the right thing and passing on the information that they have been keeping secret. With this in mind, we would like to thank everyone around the world, individuals and organisations, who have helped us by watching this special message on-line and forwarding it on to their friends, business contacts and network communities. We are once again overwhelmed and uplifted by the amazing commitment and kindness shown by the general public in our efforts to find Madeleine. The message can still be viewed, downloaded and forwarded in 7 different languages from www.ceop.police.uk We would be really grateful for your continued help. Together, we can reach that person who knows.

If you are that person, remember that it is never too late to do the right thing. This will never go away until we have found Madeleine. We love her too much. Please do the right thing by giving that information to your local police. Alternatively, please call the ‘Find Madeleine’ investigation team on +44 (0)845 838 4699 or email the team at investigation@findmadeleine.com.One email or one phone-call – and this nightmare could be over for everyone.

Madeleine video gets 100,000 hits an hour

Up to 100,000 people an hour from more than 150 countries are viewing a web video, released in the search for Madeleine McCann.

The clip targets people who may be close to the person who was involved in her disappearance in 2007.

A Minute for Madeleine was released on Tuesday morning by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (Ceop) Centre.

The film includes fresh images of how Madeleine might look now, aged six, including one with dark brown hair and tanned skin.

It has already been spread across thousands of social networking sites, blogs, and search engines. On Twitter, celebrities including Jonathan Ross, Chris Evans, Alan Carr and Phillip Schofield have "tweeted" the link to their followers.

Ceop Chief Executive Jim Gamble said: "We are delighted with the response so far but this is only the start."

Madeleine was nearly four when she went missing during a holiday in Praia da Luz in Portugal.

How she may look now

These are the images that show how Madeleine McCann would look two and a half years after she vanished.

Police hope the new computer generated pictures will spark a flood of possible sightings and lead them to the missing youngster’s whereabouts.

One shows how she would appear, now aged six, if being held in Europe – with her skin still pale.

The other is an image of her face had she been taken to North Africa, with a suntan and dark hair.

The pictures were released after Madeleine’s heartbroken parents Gerry and Kate, both 41, begged one of Britain’s leading child abduction police officers to help them find their precious daughter, who vanished from a Portuguese holiday apartment in May 2007.

They wrote a letter to Child Exploitation and Online Protection centre boss Jim Gamble – and he was so moved by it he decided there and then to get involved.

The officer yesterday launched a 60-second internet video clip aimed at people who may know Madeleine’s kidnapper.

Mr Gamble said: “It is the first time it has been done and I absolutely believe this has the opportunity, the potential, to get to the person we are looking for. We are not looking for someone who has seen this girl particularly.

McCanns Launch TV Blitz to Find Madeleine

KATE McCANN will take part in a round of heart-rending TV interviews this week appealing for anyone who has knowledge of her daughter Madeleine’s kidnapping to come forward.

The 41-year-old mother has been keeping a low profile for months but has now decided that she wants to take a more active part in the effort to find her daughter, who would now be six.

Madeleine vanished from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on the Algarve on May 3, 2007.

Kate will join her husband Gerry for a series of face-to-face interviews with the BBC and ITV.

And in a new move they will also speak to several Portuguese TV journalists who are flying to London later this week to interview the couple.

Kate and Gerry, of the village of Rothley in Leicestershire, hope that emotional appeals broadcast in Portugal could persuade someone to come forward with vital information and have employed a Portuguese press officer to help them get their message over.

Everton Kicks Off Madeleine T-Shirt Campaign

Everton FC is leading an international campaign to "re-energise" the search for missing Madeleine McCann.

The Premier League club is highlighting the cause as the team travels to Portugal - the country where the little girl vanished two years ago while on a family holiday in Praia de Luz.

The team faces Benfica on Thursday in a Europa League match and have commissioned 6,000 T-shirts for fans to wear.

Each shirt bears the message: "We're still looking for you".

Some 3,000 shirts show the message in English with the other half are written in Portuguese.

One of the first images released by Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry, in the wake of their daughter's disappearance 29 months ago showed the then four-year-old proudly wearing an Everton shirt.

Banned Book Caused 'Distress'

A book claiming Madeleine McCann was dead, which has now been banned, caused "incredible distress" to her family, her father has said

A judge ordered an end to the sale of the book by a former investigating police officer in the case, Goncalo Amaral.

Mr McCann added that Madeleine's brother and sister, twins Sean and Amelie, needed protection from "such awful claims".

He said: "I think there's a lot of people in Portugal, and further afield, who believe there is evidence that Madeleine is dead and if people believe that they won't search for her.

"And they may have information and they may not come forward with that information, and we know for a fact that people have been told that - that Madeleine is dead.

"There is no evidence to support that, and that is unforgiveable."

The injunction, granted following a hearing last week, means he has to ensure all unsold copies of the book are removed from shops and warehouses across Europe. If he fails to do so he faces a fine of £877 a day.

Parents of Madeleine McCann given hope by Jaycee Lee Dugard case

On Friday, the parents of missing Madeleine McCann said the reappearance of Jaycee Lee Dugard, the 11-year-old girl kidnapped in 1991, makes them more determined to find their daughter.

A 4-year-old Madeleine went missing on May 3, 2007, from an apartment where her family was staying while on vacation in Portugal. She is thought to have been kidnapped by a stranger as her parents dined nearby with friends.

“Once again this [Jaycee's recovery] shows that children can sometimes disappear off the radar only to be found years later alive,” said Kate and Gerry McCann.

Police told McCann case 'mystery brunette' in VictoriaPolice

The "agitated" woman appeared to be waiting impatiently for somebody when one of the Englishmen, aged 41, tried to chat her up.

It is claimed she asked him in an Australian accent, "Are you here to deliver my new daughter? Have you got her? Have you got the child?"

The men allegedly did not come forward earlier because of "personal circumstances" -- at least one of them was married.

Other witnesses who have since come forward noted she spoke excellent Spanish or Catalan and was wearing dressy blue jeans and a jersey top.

Maddie Cops 'know' Posh Double

POLICE in Australia believe they know the identity of the Victoria Beckham lookalike being hunted by Madeleine McCann investigators.

Last night they began a nationwide hunt for her after being given her name and a photograph by a woman from Sydney.

It is believed the Posh Spice double may have vital information about Maddie’s disappearance two years ago.

Just 72 hours after the youngster vanished from Praia da Luz, Portugal, the woman was spotted acting suspiciously in Barcelona, Spain.

Appearing agitated, she approached a British man, asking: “Are you here to deliver my new daughter?”

The woman, who had an Aussie accent, then had a row with someone at a nearby bar in either Spanish or the local Catalan language.

Yesterday it emerged that a witness walked into a police station in Burwood, Sydney, to say she knew the woman.

The witness, believed to be Nelida Martinez, told police she met the woman in Spain and had travelled with her in Portugal.

A detective said: “She showed us a picture of the woman on a plane from Portugal and we got goosebumps.

Madeleine police make dramatic breakthrough in hunt

Police in Sydney are investigating what might be a dramatic breakthrough in the hunt for Madeleine McCann.

They have been given a potential lead towards a woman who is at the centre of recent developments in the two year old case.

A New South Wales police spokesman reported today that they had received information about a woman who is similar in description to an Australian woman being sought by private investigators.

Police were contacted by another woman who said she knows the mystery woman being hunted by private detectives looking for Madeleine.

swamped with calls about new lead

Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry McCann, said there had already been a "substantial" response to the appeal, including several possible names for the woman.

The private detectives are now going through the information from the public and deciding which leads to follow up.

Mr Mitchell said: "We have had a substantial response overnight, with many hundreds of calls coming in particular from Australia.

"I understand many calls have also been made to the Australian police.

"Some names have been put forward, and all of this information is now being analysed and prioritised by the detectives.

"They are extremely grateful to everyone who has come forward with information.

"Where and when appropriate they will of course be liaising with the Australian authorities.

"As we stressed yesterday, the Australian dimension is just one part of the overall investigation into Madeleine's disappearance and work is continuing on several fronts."

Madeleine McCann Press Conference

e-fit Scene Port Olimpic Marina

Mr Mitchell said the two men first saw the woman when they were drinking in bars at the city's Port Olimpic Marina at about 2am.

He said she was well-dressed but appeared agitated and kept walking up and down outside the El Ray de la Gamba restaurant bar.

Scene of where conversation with woman took place

One of the witnesses, a 41-year-old British man, had a brief conversation with her.

Mr Mitchell would not reveal what she said for operational reasons, but said it was "potentially significant" to the little girl's disappearance.

He said the woman was then seen having a "heated conversation" with another person in Spanish in a nearby bar. She then wandered off towards a hospital.

The witnesses said the brown-haired woman was aged between 30 and 35, slim, about 5ft 2in tall, and described as "a bit of a Victoria Beckham lookalike".

She is said to have had an Australian accent, and is also thought to speak fluent Spanish or Catalan.

Appeal for key Australian witness in Madeleine McCann hunt

An Australian woman who could hold the key to the riddle of missing Madeleine McCann is being sought by British private investigators.

The woman had a late-night chat with a British man outside a bar in Barcelona just three days after Madeleine went missing 27 months ago.

Retired cops probing her disappearance want to verify the conversation, which has only just come to light.

A worldwide hunt will be launched at a press conference in London today with an e-fit of the woman released.

An investigator said: “This woman is reported to have said something highly significant to the British witness – significant enough for us to launch a hunt for her.”

“The British man has only recently come forward. There appear to be a number of good reasons for that. But he has been checked out thoroughly and seems credible.”

Search for Madeleine McCann moves to Australia

Britain's Daily Mail reports private detectives have been given information about an Australian man they believe could be linked to her disappearance.

However The Sun says it is an Australian woman that is believed to hold vital clues to the British girls' abduction in May 2007.

Both reports say the information relates to a conversation the Australian had with a Briton in Spain just days after Maddie's disappearance from her holiday appartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal.

The Sun quoted "a source close to the investigation" as saying: "What this Australian is reported to have said is of enough significant interest to launch a hunt for her.

"We don't know where she is.

"She could still be in Spain, back in Australia, or anywhere else.

"But we need to find her quickly."

Now the hunt for Madeleine McCann moves Down Under

The search for Madeleine McCann last night switched to Australia as detectives began hunting for a new suspect.

A witness has given Kate and Gerry McCann's private detectives fresh information about an Australian man they believe could be linked to Madeleine's disappearance.

The investigators believe the man is of 'potential significance' to their hunt and will today make a dramatic public appeal for help to find him.

They are expected to release images of the man and information about his possible link to the two-year search for Madeleine.

Dave Edgar, one of two retired detectives hired by the McCanns to co-ordinate the hunt, is to due make the appeal at a press conference in London.

McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: 'We want the public's help to identify someone. We are making an appeal based on new information.' He refused to give further details.

Update from Find Madeleine

Update from FindMadeleine Official website

On a more positive note, we have recently been planning a summer campaign in the hope that holiday-makers, travel companies and transport agencies will help us again in our search for Madeleine. So far, things are looking promising and we will soon have ‘travel packs’ available via the website for anyone willing to help in this way. We greatly appreciate the continued help and support we are receiving from the general public. It’s incredibly reassuring and uplifting that over two years down the line so many people still want to help. Without doubt, it will increase our chance of finding Madeleine.

On Tuesday evening, we took part in the Rothley & Soar Valley Lions 10K road race here in the village. Twenty of us (family and friends) wore our Madeleine t-shirts and that together with cheers of encouragement from spectators, made it all worthwhile. It was a really enjoyable evening and a fantastically well-supported event. We’re already talking about next years run! Hopefully we wont be needing to wear our t-shirts for that one.

Meeting For Families of Missing Children

THE parents of Madeleine McCann have had an emotional first meeting with other families of missing children.

Liverpool-born Kate and Gerry McCann took part in an event to mark International Missing Children’s Day yesterday, alongside relatives of Katrice Lee, who was two when she disappeared in Germany more than 27 years ago.

The couple spoke of how they could not bear to meet other families in their situation in the days and weeks after Madeleine vanished from Portugal, in May, 2007, but now drew strength from sharing their experiences.

Sitting next to Katrice’s sister, Natasha, and mother, Sharon, Mrs McCann said: “It’s easy to meet families where children have been found because that gives you hope.

“But, obviously, emotionally it is quite difficult to put yourself in a situation where a child has been missing for years and years.

“Obviously now it is easier, and I have to say it’s been a comfort.”

Her husband added: “Early on, Kate and I couldn’t even entertain the idea of speaking to another family whose child was still missing, particularly for a long time, because you think, ‘I just hope we don’t get there’.”

The McCanns also revealed they have been supported by letters from other relatives of missing children, including the family of Daniel Morcombe, who was 13 when he disappeared from the Sunshine Coast, in Queensland, Australia, on December 7, 2003.

'Ugly' suspect sought over missing Maddie

Suspect pictures have been revealed by Madeleine McCann’s parents, the pictures were put together after statements made to the Portuguse Police, the missing child’s parents have looked into 30,000 pages of files at the Portuguese police in an attempt to help the investigation for finding their missing angel.

The parents of missing toddler Madeleine McCann issued a new picture Thursday of a man described as "very ugly" sought over her disappearance in Portugal two years ago.

The artist's impression depicts a dark-haired man with pockmarked skin and a large nose who was seen watching the holiday apartment in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz where the three-year-old disappeared on May 3, 2007.

Portuguese police have said they are no longer actively investigating the case.

Madeleine McCann: Family must never give up hope

As the second anniversary of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance approaches, a former Merseyside police detective tells Greg O’Keeffe why her parents should never abandon the search

WITH quiet dignity and total determination, Albert Kirby solved one of Merseyside’s most shocking murders.

Now the Merseyside detective who brought James Bulger’s killers to justice has spoken of his frustration at the missed opportunities in the search for Madeleine McCann.

The retired former commander of the Serious Crimes Squad believes a “golden chance” went begging last year when the McCanns decided not to travel back to Portugal to help stage a reconstruction of the night their daughter vanished.

Speaking ahead of the McCanns’ forthcoming appearance on US chat show Oprah Winfrey, alongside a new Channel 4 Cutting Edge documentary, he explained how he thinks the case will now develop.

Mr Kirby, who flew to the Algarve in the hope of offering his expertise on the abduction shortly after it happened on May 3, 2007, insists there is still every reason that Madeleine’s family can hold onto their hope she will be found alive.

'Older' Madeleine image released

An image of how Madeleine McCann might look now, if still alive, has been released ahead of the second anniversary of her disappearance.

Gerry and Kate McCann are to distribute their daughter's image worldwide as part of their continuing search for Madeleine, who vanished aged three.

The McCanns used a forensic imaging artist to produce a photographic impression of an older Madeleine.

She vanished from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal in May 2007.

Her parents believe there is "a very real likelihood" that Madeleine is still alive, and the poster shows her aged nearly six, smiling and with a pink head-band in her fair shoulder-length hair.

Alongside it is the well-known picture of Madeleine taken just before she went missing.

McCann spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "This is the child that somebody who is close to Madeleine may spot, rather than the child in those other photos."

At the US National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, an artist used photographs of Mr and Mrs McCann at around the same childhood age to produce an "age progression image".

The couple believe it is the most realistic picture possible of how she might look today, said Mr Mitchell.

He said it was "difficult" for Mrs McCann see the image at first, but over time she got used to it.

Madeleine McCann Age Progression Picture

Missing Madeleine McCann as she may look now

Campaign supported by Madeleine McCann's parents gets £900K in f

A EUROPE-wide alert system for missing children has received a £900,000 European Commission handout on the eve of the second anniversary of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance.

Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry, whose daughter disappeared from a Portuguese holiday resort on May 3 2007, have been campaigning ever since for closer cooperation between EU countries to help prevent child abductions across borders.

They twice took their campaign to the European Parliament last year, winning support from MEPs for increased action to set up a US-style "Amber Alert" early warning system which has led to the safe return of hundreds of children when the alarm has been raised across state lines.

A similar network across 27 European countries could have helped raise awareness faster about Madeleine’s apparent abduction from the McCann’s holiday villa.

Maddy: two years of heartbreak -- and prayers

A small banner has appeared on the homepage of the official Madeleine McCann website. It reads: Coming soon, new 'Never Give Up' t-shirts. Two years on from the disappearance of the three-year-old girl from her family's holiday apartment in Portugal, it has become her parents' mantra.

The news cameras have moved on and the police investigation has closed down. Madeleine's family appears to operate under some semblance of normality. Gerry McCann has returned to his work as a consultant cardiologist and he and Kate recently celebrated the fourth birthday of twins Sean and Amelie. Kate McCann never returned to her position as a GP, a decision probably informed by a number of factors, not least a desire to be at home with her two remaining children.

Yet as the two-year anniversary of the disappearance on May 3, 2007, draws close, it is clear that the Madeleine campaign simmers on and is continuing to provoke a strong reaction. The McCanns are booked for The Oprah Winfrey Show show on May 9, three days before what should be Madeleine's sixth birthday. This appearance on the world's most consistently popular chat show will bring the spotlight on the McCanns back into sharp focus.

Madeleine McCann's Parents Head to U.S. for Oprah Special

Two years after little Madeleine McCann disappeared, her parents are stepping up their campaign to ensure that she is not forgotten.

Gerry and Kate McCan, who were once treated as suspects in the case, headed to the U.S. Wednesday as they prepared to appear on a special Oprah Winfrey Show airing May 4 – a day after the two-year anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance.

As they stepped onto the plane, news emerged in one British newspaper that a new suspect is being checked into. The Sun reports that the family's investigators have come across some new evidence as they combed the official police files. The paper claims that witnesses saw a man "loitering alone on a road near the flat where Maddie's family were staying in Praia da Luz."

Madeleine McCann's father returns to Portugal

Madeleine McCann's father Gerry McCann has returned to Portugal to advise private detectives filming a reconstruction of her disappearance.

Family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said Mr McCann and two family friends have returned to the resort area of Praia da Luz to help with the filming.

The reconstruction will be shown in a Channel 4 Cutting Edge documentary.

Madeleine, of Rothley, Leicestershire, was three when she vanished from the Algarve holiday flat on 3 May 2007.

The reconstruction - being filmed by the McCanns' own private investigators - will focus on what happened on the night, as described by witness statements.

Negotiations are under way for the reconstruction to be shown on Portuguese television and in other European countries, and it will be also be available on the Find Madeleine website.

Mr Mitchell said: "The aim of this is to get that critical piece of information that could still help to find Madeleine. Gerry has returned with that aim.

"Certain aspects of the witness testimony were hidden deep in the police files and these particular aspects have received very little attention. The private investigators feel that it is very important to highlight these things.

"It's being done simply in the hope that it will jog someone's memory."
