Thinking of Hassani Campbell one year on

What happened to Hasanni?

OAKLAND -- When Jaycee Dugard was rescued nearly a year ago from a home in unincorporated Antioch, Sharon Nemeth Murch leapt out of bed and told her husband that they had to paint the kitchen before her daughter, Michaela Garecht, missing for 22 years, came home.

She so strongly believed that Dugard's captors had her daughter that she began planning Michaela's homecoming.

Mike Misheloff and his wife, Madelyne, have kept the same phone number from 1989 because they know it's the one their daughter, Ilene, knew as a child. They don't use the number, but when it rings, Mike Misheloff grabs the phone and demands to know who is on the other end. It could be his daughter, he said. The couple have refused to move from their Dublin home because that is the place Ilene knows.

When Ronald Hughes talks about the August 2009 disappearance of his son, Hasanni Campbell, he says he is "hopeful" the boy will be found. He talks optimistically about two reported sightings of the boy who disappeared when he was 5 years old, both of which turned out to be false leads.

Every year, 800,000 children younger than 18 are reported missing, an average of about 2,200 every day, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in Alexandria, Va. Of the children who are eventually found, about 200,000 were taken by family members, while about 58,000 were abducted by someone outside the family, the organization reports. The whereabouts of the remainder of the children are uncertain.

Hasanni goes missing

"My thoughts are that (Hasanni) was kidnapped and I still have hope of finding him. I know somebody knows something," said Pamela Clarke, the boy's grandmother, who lives in San Francisco. In the past year, there have been at least a dozen searches for the boy, all of which turned up empty.

Hasanni was reported missing on the afternoon of Aug. 10, 2009, by his then-foster father Louis Ross. Ross, now 39, told Oakland police he left the child alone in a back driveway when he went to the front of Shuz of Rockridge on College Avenue in Oakland to alert his girlfriend, Jennifer Campbell, the boy's aunt and then-foster mother, that he had arrived to drop off Hasanni and the boy's 1-year-old sister.

Today marks 1 year that Hasanni Campbell has been missing

I have followed these reports since last August when he went missing and I do not understand how this case has gone cold. A little boy is missing, a handicapped child! This story needs to be brought back into the eyes of the media so that we can finally have a lead to finding out what happened. 8/10/10

Find Hasanni

I agree, I have no understanding as to why this case has gone cold. This poor child needs to be found!

It's been almost a year.....

It's been almost a year since Hassani's been missing. Are there any updates? Where are his foster parents living now with their baby? How is Hassani's birth mother doing? It would be nice if the media can do a story to renew some focus and interest in finding Hassani.

Hassani Cambell - reply to query

Unfortunately we have no further updates on the disappearance of Hassani, but like you we would like to see the media pick up the story again and renewing the campaign into finding out what happeded to him and where he is. Thank you for your continuing interest.

I truley hope that you find

I truley hope that you find your boy, he has touched my heart and I often think of him and wonder where he might be.

Still holding hope

Hassani's face has been on my myspace page since the beginning and will not come down until he is found. I was 5 months pregnant when I heard about his disappearance and was shocked. I live in the area and know the location well. I can't believe he has fallen off the radar of the media and others. We continue to network and bolster support where we can. I would still like to volunteer to help find him. I couldn't before because I was pregnant, but I am willing and able now. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Sad that Hassani is still missing

It is so sad that Hassani is still missing Cassie and we understand your concern. We currently have no information about any planned search activity for Hassani. If we hear of anything we will post it here on Hassani's blog.

Hasanni Campbell and how you can help the search

First I would like to thank each and every one of you that have expressed concerned to find answers in the disappearance of Hasanni Campbell. As you may know we met with the deputy district attorney for alameda county and he advised us on what needs to happen. Hasanni's case needs to become a national case. Louis Ross has moved to Maryland and we are looking for volunteers in the Baltimore area that can distribute flyers regarding the case and the $75,000 reward that is offered. We are also looking for volunteers that can distribute flyers in Arizona where Jennifer Campbell has moved to. We are looking to distribute these flyers in both states simultaneously and will provide flyers and t-shirts for the volunteers, we are looking at the weekend of September 24th (Hasanni's 7th Birthday). For more information on how you can volunteer and have flyers and t-shirts sent to you please call The CFL Society 1-800-548-0016 or email citizensforthelost@gmail.com you can learn more about the foundation at www.citizensforthelost.com

Chief Batts: Hasanni Campbell Case Still A Priority

OAKLAND, Calif. -- At a monthly hearing to discuss the Oakland Police Department’s battle to reduce crime in the troubled city, Chief Anthony Batts said the investigation into the disappearance of Hasanni Campbell more than seven months ago "continues to be a priority" for the department.

Batts said, "There are some leads we're following up on and I hope they lead to a conclusion soon."

Deputy Chief Jeffrey Israel said the department recently partnered with the Alameda County sheriff's search and rescue team to try to find the missing Fremont boy -- who has cerebral palsy -- but was unable to locate him.

Israel declined to say what area was searched. Previously there were several other unsuccessful searches for Hasanni. Some were conducted by law enforcement officials and some were conducted by volunteers.

Rally for missing Fremont boy

About 20 people attended a candlelight vigil in front of the Oakland Police Department on Wednesday night to mark six months since the disappearance of Hasanni Campbell.

Wednesday night's rally was organized by The Citizens for the Lost, a group cofounded by Sherri-Lyn Miller and Courtney Tascoe-Burris. The group has held fundraisers, vigils and searches since the boy went missing.

"It's really enlightening to see you all here," said Tascoe-Burris, daughter of attorney John Burris, who was advising Hasanni's foster parents for a short time. "All of us are here for a common purpose, because of a little boy lost."

Police said the case remains under investigation. "We have never stopped investigating it. With the level of evidence, witness statements and canvasses, there's a massive level of information that's coming in on this investigation," said Oakland police spokesman Officer Jeff Thomason. "We're still pursuing this case, and we're not going to stop pursuing it until there's closure."

Anyone with information about Hasanni's disappearance may call Oakland police at 510-777-3211 or 510-238-7934, or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572. There is a $75,000 reward for information leading to Hasanni's whereabouts.

Rally Planned For Missing Bay Area Boy - Hassani Campbell

It's been six months since 6-year-old Hasanni Campbell disappeared outside an Oakland shoe store, and volunteers are planning another rally to invigorate the search.

The boy, who has cerebral palsy, was reported missing Aug. 10 by his foster father, Louis Ross, who says he disappeared from a parked car in the Rockridge neighborhood.

Searches have turned up no signs of Hasanni, and police are now treating the case as a homicide.

Ross and Hasanni's foster mother, Jennifer Campbell, previously were arrested on suspicion of murder, then released because prosecutors didn't have enough evidence to file charges.

Rally organizer Sherri-Lyn Miller said Ross and Campbell have since split up and are no longer in contact with search volunteers.

The rally is scheduled for next Wednesday outside Oakland police headquarters.

Hasanni's foster parents have split up

Hasanni Campbell's foster parents have split up and cut off contact with volunteers who are still searching for the boy.

Our media partner, The Oakland Tribune, is reporting that Hasanni's foster parents, Jennifer Campbell and Louis Ross, broke up soon after the birth of their daughter in November.

Ross reportedly has moved to Arizona.

Hasanni's foster parents leave Bay Area

Missing Hasanni Campbell's foster parents, who were once suspects in the case, have moved away from the Bay Area.

San Leandro businesswoman Sherri Miller has organized vigils, searches, and fundraisers to try to find the missing boy. At first, the events were with the participation of Campbell’s foster parents.

The Fremont house Ross rented with Jennifer Campbell stands vacant and for sale, the couple having packed up with their new two-month-old baby two weeks ago.

“There was a lot of stuff being thrown away,” said the neighbor. “There was a couple of people who came to help with the move.”

At about the same time, another neighbor said she saw police come around and seize one of the couple's cars, believed to be a white BMW.

Foster father Ross was cooperative with authorities during the investigation until he and Jennifer Campbell were arrested on suspicion of murder and jailed briefly. Charges were never filed due to lack of evidence.

“Once they were arrested, they cut off contact with everybody,” said Sherri Miller.

Miller said in December, when volunteers tried to post missing flyers around the couple's Fremont home, Ross told them to "get the hell out."

Hearing the couple may be gone for good affirmed Millers worst fears about their motives.

Monday night, KTVU spoke by phone with Hasanni's maternal grandmother. She said she did not know where the couple is, or if they're still together.

A rally is planned outside Oakland Police headquarters on February 10th to show Hasanni Campbell has not been forgotten.

Volunteers Renew Interest In Missing Fremont Boy

FREMONT, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Volunteers fanned out Saturday in hopes of reviving public interest in the case of a 6-year-old disabled boy who's been missing since August.

The group gathered at the Park & Ride off Ardenwood Blvd. in Fremont armed with fliers bearing updated photos of Hasanni Campbell.

"We're out here trying to get his story back out there and let people know he needs to be found," said volunteer Sherri-Lyn Miller.

The volunteers will focus their efforts primarily in the Newark/Fremont area as well as Hayward and Berkeley.

"We want to go out at least once a month, re-search areas, search areas where we haven't searched. There's a lot of territory to cover; Fremont alone is over 100 square miles," said search coordinator Wayne Slack Sr.

Hasanni Campbell investigation - $75,000 reward

The article by Tammerlin Drummond, a columnist with the San Jose Mercury News, posses many questions about the circumstances surrounding Hasanni Campbell's disappearance and its investigation, which does not appear to be progressing.

The police remain convinced that Hasanni is no longer alive and that his foster parents, Louis Ross and Jennifer Campbell were involved in this. The police have been unable to provide evidence of this for charges to be made against them and they do not appear to making any progress in finding this evidence and are also not actively searching for Hasanni. Ross and Campbell are refusing to speak further to the police or the media about Hasanni.

Volunteers are still making efforts to find Hasanni, without any apparent involvement of the foster parents or direct assistance from the police.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Oakland Police Department at 510-238-7934 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.

$75K reward, few leads for missing Oakland boy - Hassani C.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Volunteers trying to find a 5-year-old Oakland boy who's been missing for more than three months are hoping a $75,000 reward will bring some fresh leads to the case.

They've held a number of vigils for Hasanni Campbell since he was reported missing Aug. 10, but they say the latest one Tuesday had a poor turnout. Authorities and volunteers have now raised the reward, up from the $60,000 announced in September.

Hasanni, who has cerebral palsy, reportedly went missing when his foster father, Louis Ross, briefly left him alone in a parked car in the city's Rockridge neighborhood.

Police initially arrested Ross and his fiancee, Jennifer Campbell, on suspicion of murder, but prosecutors declined to file charges due to lack of evidence. Authorities say searches have turned up no significant leads in the case.

Event to help finance search for missing Fremont boy

It's nearly two months since Hasanni Campbell, a 5-year-old boy with cerebral palsy, was reported missing and  the attention the case is getting has lessened significantly. Vigils once held weekly are now once a month at the request of his foster parents. An organized search for the boy hasn't been done since the last weekend in September.

Sherri Miller, who has been heading the searches and organizing the vigils, held a planning meeting for a fundraising dinner. Turnout of volunteers was far lower than she expected. "The volunteers that are left still want to do things," Miller said. "We are now at a point where we don't know where to search, so we just have to look everywhere."

Miller and Courtney Tascoe-Burris are planning a fundraising dinner from 2 to 8 p.m. Nov. 1 at Garre Vineyard & Winery, 7986 Tesla Road, Livermore. The winery donated the space, but they need people to arrange, and set up the event. They are also seeking donations of food and silent auction items. Miller hopes people will buy $30 tickets for the event which will include entertainment. Invited guests include Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"We don't want him to be forgotten," Miller said. "He's still out there somewhere, and we need to find him and bring him home.

SEARCH FOR MISSING FREMONT BOY TURNS UP SUSPICIOUS SWEATSHIRT

SEARCH FOR MISSING FREMONT BOY TURNS UP SUSPICIOUS SWEATSHIRT

FREMONT -- The search for a Fremont boy who police believe was murdered took a strange twist yesterday, when a group of volunteers looking for the boy discovered some discarded clothing just a mile away from where he was last seen.

The group discovered a gray sweatshirt, child's sock and a piece of a blanket on a hillside.

Police cordoned off the area and inspected the clothing, but say it doesn't appear to have been worn by 5-year-old Hassani Campbell.

Volunteers have been combing the area where Campbell's foster parents claim he went missing a month ago.

Police say they believe Campbell was killed.

Tests being run of shirt found in missing boy case

OAKLAND, Calif.—Oakland police say it could take up to two weeks to analyze a sweat shirt found by volunteer searchers looking for a 5-year-old boy missing for five weeks.

Officer Jeff Thomason says the clothing is being tested even though investigators don't think it belongs to Hasanni Campbell.

Hasanni's foster father, Louis Ross, told police the boy was wearing a gray sweat shirt when he went missing on Aug. 10. The shirt that was found buried in the Oakland Hills Sunday is also gray, but is a different size and brand from Hasanni's shirt.

Ross and his fiancee Jennifer Campbell—Hasanni's foster mother—were previously arrested on suspicion of murder, but released when prosecutors said there was not enough evidence to file charges.

Search planned for disabled Oakland boy

OAKLAND, Calif.—Volunteers plan to scour across Oakland this weekend to search for a 5-year-old disabled boy who has been missing for a month.

Organizer Sherri-Lyn Miller says dozens are expected to help in the search on Sunday for Hasanni Campbell.

Hasanni was reported missing on Aug. 10 by his foster father, Louis Ross.

Ross said he briefly left the boy outside his car in the parking lot of a shoe store where his fiancee and Hasanni's foster mother, Jennifer Campbell, works.

Ross said when he returned the boy, who has cerebral palsy, was gone.

Hasanni is black, 3 feet tall, weighs 30 pounds and was last seen wearing a gray sweat shirt and gray pants. He wears arches on his legs to help him walk.

All Suspects

I'm encouraged to learn that volunteers have not given up hope of finding Hassani. There is a slim possibility that he is still alive. However, I have a theory that the police should be looking at other suspects in this case. Beginning with Hassani' natural parents Shemika Campbell and the father, the police in Oakland, San Francisco, and Fremont could easily rule them both out all persons of interest. After all, the parents had been accused of child abuse, which is why the children were put into foster care in the first place.

Search Organizers Hold Vigil For Missing Boy

On Monday night, about two dozen people gathered for a prayer vigil in honor of missing Fremont five-year-old Hassani Campbell at the College Avenue Presbyterian Church.

It has now been four weeks since the five-year old was reported missing from the Rockridge neighborhood in oakland.

Hasanni's foster father Louis Ross and foster mother Jennifer Campbell attended the service.

This past Saturday, more than 100 civilian volunteers, including the San Jose Search and Rescue Team and the Newark Community Emergency Response Team, searched Lake Elizabeth Central Park in Fremont, according to event organizer Sherri-Lyn Miller.

(...)

"We didn't find Hasanni here and that is good news for us," Miller said. "Now we can go to Oakland and focus on the area where it was reported he disappeared."

(...)

Another search for the missing Fremont boy is planned for this Saturday. Organizers said this time they'll focus their efforts on the Rockridge neighborhood where his foster father reportedly last saw him.

Search for missing Hassani continues ..

FREMONT, Calif. (KCBS)  -- A group of 100 strong gathered in Fremont Saturday to continue the search for missing 5-year-old Hasanni Campbell.

Volunteers from both the South and East Bay met at Lake Elizabeth in an effort to locate the Fremont boy, who was reported missing on August 10.

"You know, I'm very concerned that if he's out there alive, we'd like to find him," said one volunteer.

About a dozen search teams fanned out around the lake, a diver was brought in to search the bottom and others walked around the park.

Campbell was reported missing in the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland and Oakland Police said they believe the boy may have been murdered.

His foster parents, Louis Ross and Jennifer Campbell were arrested llast week in connection with the case, but prosecutors said there was not enough evidence and they were released a few days later.

Organizers of Saturday's search said they plan to continue to look for Campbell until he is found and returned home.

Reward Increases for information about missing Hassani

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Both Alameda and San Francisco counties have helped to increase the reward for information about missing 5-year-old Hasanni Campbell.

The Fremont boy was reported missing on August 10 by his foster father, Louis Ross.

Both counties have added an additional $25,000 each in reward money, which now stands at $60,000 for information in the case.

Both Ross and the boy's foster mother, Jennifer Campbell were arrested last week in connection with the case.

They were both released as attorneys said there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute the couple.

The Oakland Police Department said Campbell's foster parents continue to be at the center of their investigation into the boy's disappearance.

Search for Hasanni continues Saturday at Lake Elizabeth

FREMONT — Volunteers and donations of food and beverages are needed for the Saturday search for Hasanni Campbell, the disabled Fremont boy who was reported missing Aug. 10.

Sherri Miller is organizing the search of Lake Elizabeth at 40000 Paseo Padre Parkway in Fremont. A certified diver contacted Miller to volunteer his time, and the San Jose volunteer search and rescue team will bring diving equipment to the search, which starts at 9 a.m. Saturday. But Miller said Wednesday she still needs volunteers to register people at the start, assign tasks and assist with lunch.

She said she also needs donated food and beverages to feed the volunteers.

Miller, the owner of All in One Stop, a San Leandro print shop, got involved in the search the day after the 5-year-old boy was reported missing from the rear driveway of Shuz of Rockridge, a shoe store where Jennifer Campbell, the boy's foster mother and aunt, works.

Police say foster parents of Hassani are still suspects

Oakland Acting Police Chief Howard Jordan said today that the foster parents of missing 5-year-old boy Hasanni Campbell are still the main suspects in the case even though prosecutors say there's not enough evidence to charge them at this time.

In a one-minute statement to reporters, Jordan said, "We're asking for the public's help to solve this case and potentially re-arrest Mr. Louis Ross and Jennifer Campbell."

Ross, 38, and Campbell, 30, who lived with Hasanni and another child, a 1-year-old girl, in Fremont, were arrested last Friday, but the Alameda County District Attorney's Office has declined to file charges against them, stating that there's insufficient evidence.

DA Drops All Charges in Hasanni Campbell Case

The district attorney won't file charges against the man arrested in the disappearance of his fiancee's disabled foster child.

That word crossed the wires early Tuesday morning.

Alameda County Assistant District Attorney Tom Rogers says there's insufficient evidence against Louis Ross in the Aug. 10 disappearance of Hasanni Campbell.

Rogers says the 38-year-old Ross will be released later Tuesday.

An attorney who has consulted with the foster parents of the 5-year-old old, who was reported missing three weeks ago and is now believed to have been murdered, said Monday that he was "glad" that no  charges were being filed against the foster mother either.  Burris said police rushed to judgment in an effort to get new information in the case.

Sherri-Lyn Miller, a volunteer whose company has created T-shirts and fliers during the search, said the focus should be on locating Hasanni, not on Ross and Campbell.

D.A. won't charge foster dad in Hasanni case

The foster father of a missing 5-year-old Fremont boy will not face criminal charges and will be released from jail, an Alameda County prosecutor said today.

Rogers declined to elaborate, but said the investigation by Oakland police was continuing.

Missing 5-year-old's foster mother: "We wouldn't hurt him for an

The foster mother of Hasanni Campbell, the 5-year-old disabled Fremont boy who police now consider a homicide victim, was released from jail Monday.

Jennifer Campbell, who is six months pregnant, and her fiance, Louis Ross, were arrested Friday. Alameda County Assistant District Attorney Tom Rogers said no charges will be filed against Campbell, 30, who was released from Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. "There is insufficient evidence at this time, and the investigation is continuing," Rogers said.

Campbell, just hours out of jail, attended a vigil Monday at College Avenue Presbyterian Church across the street from Shuz of Rockridge, where the boy was reported missing Aug. 10.

"I'm not doing well," she said in an interview after the vigil. "I'm inspired by the people who are here. I'm inspired by God. When I was incarcerated, my faith was stronger than ever."

Asked what she thinks will happen to Ross, she said: "They didn't have any evidence to hold me. They shouldn't have any evidence to hold him either. We wouldn't hurt (Hasanni) for anything in the world. Anyone who knows me knows that. Anybody who knows (Ross) knows he's not capable either."
