Private firm hired to find missing NY teen

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The head of a company that helps parents find missing children has hired a detective agency to search for a New York state teenager missing in South Carolina for almost a year.

Seventeen-year-old Brittanee Drexel of Rochester, N.Y., was last seen walking out of a Myrtle Beach hotel during a spring break trip last April. Her cell phone gave off its last signal several hours later about 40 miles south near the Santee River.

Search for Brittanee continues, no new leads

The search continues for 17- year old Brittanee Drexel was last seen leaving a Myrtle Beach hotel in April, while vacationing from New York.

Her family and volunteers from the CUE center from Missing Persons are back in the Grand Strand searching for the teen. About 100 people showed up to help search the area near the North Santee River.

Though temperatures were just above freezing that didn't stop volunteers from spending the day searching for clues. The search party had ATV's, dogs, horses and of course, people. Everyone bundeled up and covered about 100 acres of land before lunch.

Brittanee's mom, Dawn Drexel says these searches are very nerve-racking, and that's why she says she didn't get much sleep. She says the possibilities are endless and at this point, it's just a waiting game, "the area that's out here is just all woods, and normally when they're looking in the woods they're looking for a body, it's just scary."

Even so, everyone is very hopeful including Brittanee's Grandma Carol Wagner, "I do [have hope] because they haven't found anything I really think Brittanee's out there. She's just untouchable right now." The family urges anyone with information to come forward, Wagner pleads,"please come forward, don't leave the family out in the cold."

The crews did not find any items that apply to Brittanee's case. They say they just the normal debris and some animal bones.

Wagner said, "I don't know where we are going from here, but we are not going to stop looking, we're going to continue to look for Brittanee, she's gotta be out there somewhere."

New search for Brittanee Drexel

Friends, family members, and authorities will return to the Georgetown County area this weekend to continue the search for missing Chili teenager Brittanee Drexel. Drexel’s aunt and grandparents are also expected to team up with the search team.

(...)

Last month, crews searching near the Santee River found a pair of sunglasses similar to those belonging to Drexel. The family is still waiting to hear the results of DNA tests on those sunglasses.

Caison says authorities did not conduct any searches during the holidays, but she and a small team continued weekly searches near the Santee River, where Drexel’s phone gave off its last known signal.

Search for missing teen yields no clues - Brittanee Drexel

A team of searchers scoured woodlands near McClellanville over the weekend seeking clues in the disappearance of Brittanee Marie Drexel but came up empty-handed.

"There was nothing related to the case located," said Lt. Mark Fields of the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

Searchers were hoping to find her cell phone, clothing or anything else that would be helpful in solving the case, Fields said.

Drexel, 17, of Rochester, N.Y., last was seen in Myrtle Beach in April wearing a white, black, teal and gray top, black shorts and white flip-flops. She is 4 feet, 11 inches tall, weighs 103 pounds and has blue eyes and blond hair with highlights. Her ears and nose are pierced.

Search grows for Brittanee Drexel

On Saturday, search efforts for missing spring breaker Brittanee Drexel grew to levels not seen since the 18-year-old vanished from Ocean Boulevard in April.

More than 100 search volunteers and law enforcement officials combed through hundreds of wooded acres near the Georgetown/Charleston County line, though no signs of Drexel were found.

Efforts are focused on that area because it's where detectives tracked Drexel's cell phone signals in the first few days of her disappearance.

The searchers scoured much of the same area in April, though the heat, thick growth and active wildlife made conditions less than ideal.

Saturday morning's shot of crisp, cool air was just what searchers had hoped for this time around. The cadaver dogs, mounted horse patrols and searchers are able to work better in cooler weather, said Monica Caison with the CUE Center for Missing Persons.

Search for Brittanee Drexel delivers no new leads

Myrtle Beach police, FBI agents, and searchers with the CUE Center for Missing Persons wrapped up a search for missing teenager , Brittanee Drexel, Monday afternoon.

The areas searched on Monday had been investigated before, but they wanted to re-visit the area in the cooler weather as cooler temperatures are more advantageous for the search dogs to detect any clues. The areas searched include: Yaupon Drive near Kings Highway, 19th Ave. South off of Kings Highway, and the former Air Force Base in Myrtle Beach. They were able to eliminate these areas for any possible leads, as the search did not produce any new information.

The CUE Center plans another big search for Drexel this weekend (Oct. 17-18). No search is planned for the missing teen until then. They will be looking in the Myrtle Beach area and Georgetown County, places that have previously been searched.

New search planned for Brittanee

The CUE Center for Missing Persons in Wilmington, NC, led the search in May and is organizing a new search for the weekend of October 16th. Founder Monica Caison said cadaver dogs, a mounted horse patrol, ATVs and foot searchers will scour areas in Georgetown County near the North Santee Community.

Drexel, 18 on the 7th October, was last seen leaving the Blue Water Resort around 8:15 p.m. when surveillance video caught her walking out. Police say she was heading back to the Bar Harbour Hotel to meet up with friends.

Cpl. Vincent Dorio, says the case is being investigated daily and that leads come in weekly. "We're still actively going over every lead, reevaluating everything we've done to date to see if we've possibly missed something."  "She's been missing this long. I was hoping to have discovered she was a runaway, but it doesn't look like that," Dorio said Wednesday afternoon, though he stressed, anything is possible at this point.

Search continues for missing New York teen

October marks the six-month anniversary since New York teen, Brittanee Drexel, vanished while on spring break in Myrtle Beach.

She was last seen in the area of 11th Avenue South and 20th Avenue South in Myrtle Beach on April 25 after meeting up with friends from her hometown. Since her disappearance, a number of leads have been investigated by the Myrtle Beach Police Department and regional law enforcement agencies, but so far, all have turned into dead ends. Myrtle Beach Police suspended an active search for Drexel in June, following several weeks of no progress in the case. Investigators extended their search as far as Charleston County, along the Santee River and Coastal Reserve.

Billboards spanning from Georgetown to Myrtle Beach bear Brittanee's description and picture, in hopes of jogging the memory of someone who might know what happened to her. "It just keeps everything out in the open, so that she's seen everywhere. We know Brittanee's out there, and we're going to get her back," said Carol Wagner, her grandmother.

CrimeStoppers of the Lowcountry continues to offer a reward for any information on Drexel's whereabouts.  Anyone with information regarding the disappearance of Drexel is urged to contact the agency at 1-888-CRIME-SC.

Poker Run versus cell phone

I'm sure all the Bikers in Bradenton will be concerned and there will be plenty of photos and ribbons, but her last cell phone ping was way south of Myrtle Beach and that shows direction of travel. It also ceased suddenly and it was not likely a weak battery, so look for a swamp near the route 17 commercial bypass at a place where a vehicle could turn off the road without arousing suspicion.

Large-scale search for Rochester teen

A national organization is helping the family of a missing Rochester teen pick up the search, months after she disappeared in South Carolina.

Brittanee Drexel, 17, went missing from Myrtle beach on Spring Break back in April.

This weekend, the CUE Center for Missing Persons featured Drexel on their Missing Persons' road tour.

Mother of missing NY teen continues search

MYRTLE BEACH,SC (WMBF) - The mother of a missing New York teenager is back in Myrtle Beach this week, hoping new developments will answer questions about her disappearance.

"I miss my daughter. I miss her so much," Dawn Drexel said Thursday. "I just want her to come back home."

Brittanee Drexel, 17, went missing in April while on vacation in Myrtle Beach for spring break, and Dawn Drexel got back into Myrtle Beach around 5 a.m. Thursday to continue the search for her daughter.

"You have to keep their name out there," she commented. "A lot of people don't do that."

However, the Community United Effort (CUE) Center for Missing Persons does, and that's part of the reason why Dawn Drexel is back. The CUE Center is profiling Brittanee this weekend, and hopes to get some attention from the Larry King Live show.

I know they know something!" said Drexel.  Police interviewed the girls who went on spring break with Brittanee, but they are not suspects.

To Dawnn Drexel

My name is Debbie Spry and I live in Charleston SC., just 100 miles from Myrtle Beach. My heart goes out to you I know the horror of the pain of not knowing where your child is. If there is any thing I can do expecially since I live just a couple of hours from Myrtle Beach please just e-mail me and I'll be more than happy to to do anything, even if you just need to talk to someone that has walked in your shoes

Search time ticking for mother of missing teen

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - She's been missing for almost two months, and now, time is ticking for the mother of 17-year-old Brittanee Drexel before she temporarily abandons the search for her missing daughter to return home for work.

(...)

Dawn Drexel, the mother of Brittanee, says she is flying back to the beach until the end of the month after "tying up loose ends" with police and family in New York.  Dawn has been searching the South Carolina coast with local authorities since the disappearance of her daughter.

At the end of the month, Dawn is expected to return to work in New York, but she's not exactly leaving all hope behind.  Al and Carol Wagner, Brittanee's grandparents, say they will remain in Myrtle Beach until they find the teen, even if it means getting a South Carolina driver's license.

Missing teen’s father suspects foul play

The father of a missing Chili teenager says he felt numb watching his daughter on the TV show "America's Most Wanted".

The Brittanee Drexel case was featured on a segment this weekend.

"Not us, not our family," said Chad Drexel.  "It's hard to put it in words. It's a feeling that I would never want any parent to feel."

Brittanee disappeared six weeks ago on Spring Break. The 17-year-old was last seen leaving a hotel in Myrtle Beach. Surveillance video captured Brittanee walking down the main strip.

However, police say she didn't get far. In fact, News 10NBC has learned police believe something happened to her within seven minutes of leaving that hotel.  Police say there are several cameras further along the route she was walking, but Brittanee was never seen.

Chad Drexel says he no longer believes his daughter ran away.

"I just don’t see that happening. I just think there might have been foul play somewhere," said Drexel.

Brittanee Drexel update

In five weeks of searching, there has been no sign of Brittanee Drexel. There have been dozens of leads and sightings. None have panned out.

Brittanee’s mother, Dawn Drexel, has been in South Carolina since the beginning. She is determined as ever, but she told News 10NBC by phone Wednesday she’s emotionally spent.

“This is very, very difficult because you don’t know, you just don’t know if she’s still here with us…or she’s not….But we’re trying to keep hopeful that we can find her still,” Drexel said.

Drexel has traveled to Charleston and points in between, talking to people, handing out flyers. This weekend, Brittanee’s story will air on “America’s Most Wanted.” That gives Dawn Drexel hope.

While the search continues in South Carolina, work is going on here in Rochester.

“I’m continuing at the pace that I was five weeks ago,” Brittanee’s boyfriend John Grieco said.

Grieco had to come home after weeks of searching. He’s working to make enough money to go back. He’s also put together a major fundraiser for June 26.  It’s three parties in three locations at the Dome Arena that he hopes will raise money and keep Brittanee’s story alive.
