SLED adds agent to Drexel investigation
MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A team of investigators looking to crack the case of a missing New York teen is growing along the Grand Strand.
Lt. Neil Johnson, spokesman for the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office, said the agency has requested an additional agent from the State law Enforcement Division to assist with the Brittanee Drexel missing persons case.
SLED spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office made the request last week, and has since assigned an agent to the case. When asked the purpose of the additional agent, Timmons said the reasons for the extra manpower could jeopardize the case.
(...)
In April, authorities publicly pinpointed three or four persons of interest who have all been previously questioned by authorities in connection to the case. Johnson, however, could not confirm a time frame in which the suspects were questioned.
Two of the suspects, according to Johnson, were subjected to lie detector tests. Johnson, however, would not comment on the results of the tests.
"At this time, there is no reason to believe these people [the persons of interest] know Drexel directly," Johnson said.
Myrtle Beach Police Det. Vincent Dorio said the recent advancements in the case in April developed from a tip, and detectives are confident the information is leading them in the right direction to finding who might be responsible for Drexel's disappearance.
CrimeStoppers of the Lowcountry continues to offer a reward for any information on Drexel's whereabouts. Anyone with information regarding the disappearance of Drexel is urged to contact the agency at 1-888-CRIME-SC.

Missing teen's family accepting her diploma
The family of Brittanee Drexel will be attending her high school graduation ceremony this week to accept a honorary diploma on her behalf.
Brittanee, who went missing last year in Myrtle Beach, S.C., will be given an honorary diploma by her Rochester, N.Y., High School. Dawn Drexel will accept the diploma in her daughter's absence at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the RIT Gordon Field House in Rochester, N.Y.
She was last seen by friends on April 25, 2009, when she left the Bar Harbor Hotel in Myrtle Beach to meet friends at the nearby BlueWater Resort. Surveillance footage shows Drexel arriving at the resort, then leaving roughly 10 minutes later. What happened to her after that remains a mystery.
In April, authorities said a break in the case was at their fingertips, and said they had several suspects. However, no further updates have been provided and no arrests have been made.
Meanwhile, volunteers continue to search the Myrtle Beach area for Drexel. One of the primary missing-person groups searching for her is the CUE Center for Missing Persons in Wilmington, N.C.

No new area of interest in Brittanee Drexel case
Lt. Neil Johnson of the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office said this morning there are no new areas of interest in the case of Brittanee Drexel, a New York teenager who disappeared last year when visiting Myrtle Beach.
But searchers are still looking, said Monica Caison of the CUE Center for Missing Persons in Wilmington, N.C., which has organized searches for the missing teen since she disappeared about a year ago. Drexel was last seen on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach.
Caison said her organization searched an area in Georgetown County two weeks ago, one of several that have been on CUE's search plan from the start. She said the areas were scattered in Georgetown and elsewhere that she didn't want to identify.

Mother of missing teen reflects after one year
The mother of missing teen Brittanee Drexel calls the past year a living nightmare that won't end.
"It's the most horrible thing you ever want to go through," Dawn Drexel said during a recent interview.
On April 25, 2009, Dawn's first-born child, Brittanee, vanished from Ocean Boulevard while on spring break.
The then-17-year-old was last seen leaving the Blue Water Resort near 20th Avenue South and Ocean Boulevard, and no one has seen her since.
This time last year, Brittanee, from Rochester, NY, was juggling a lot with her mom and dad's divorce, boyfriend troubles and even a bout of depression.
So it was no surprise Brittanee wanted a break and begged her mother for permission to visit Myrtle Beach for her high school spring break.
When Dawn Drexel told her daughter no, Brittanee became angry and the two began to fight. Exhausted, Dawn allowed Brittanee to go stay a couple of nights with a friend in Rochester.
But that was a lie as Dawn found out later, and Brittanee disobeyed her mother and went to Myrtle Beach anyway.

Thinking of Brittanee Drexel - One Year Missing
Thinking of Brittanee Drexel especially today
Brittanee Drexel featured on special deck of cards
Sunday marks one year since the disappearance of Brittanee Drexel, the Rochester, New York teenager who went missing during a spring break trip to Myrtle Beach.
Searchers have already tried so many things to get information about her disappearance, but Friday they unveiled a deck of playing cards. On the front of each card is a picture of a South Carolina missing person or unsolved homicide victim.
Prison inmates have plenty of time on their hands and often, plenty of information about unsolved crimes. On a trip to Florida, Tom Lucas of Spartanburg, whose son was the victim of an unsolved murder, saw a deck of playing cards made available to prison inmates that featured information about unsolved crimes.
He thought, why not do the same in South Carolina? "My motivation is to help victims and to get information that will help solve cases and give a little bit of relief for the families," said Tom Lucas, Spartanburg Crimestoppers.
It's the second year they've put out the South Carolina Crimestoppers playing cards. This year's deck has Brittanee's picture and information on the two of diamonds, the number of her soccer jersey.

Interview with Brittanee Drexel's mother - Today Show
Nearly one year after her daughter disappeared while on spring break, Dawn Drexel appeared on Today in New York this morning and spoke with show co-host Matt Lauer about her daughter’s case. Gates Chili High School student Brittanee Drexel was 17 when she traveled to Myrtle Beach without her parents’ permission last year. She was last seen on hotel surveillance cameras on April 25, 2009. Brittanee’s family and friends have traveled to South Carolina countless times to search for the teen. Myrtle Beach and Georgetown County, S.C., police investigators said last week they are closing in on several persons of interest in the case. They also indicated that they believe Brittanee is no longer alive. Dawn Drexel today told Lauer that police have not shared many details about the recent developments in her daughter’s case. She said they told her they are focusing on three or four persons of interest and a location of interest. She also said she believes one of three things has happened to Brittanee. “She’s being held against her will, she’s been trafficked or she’s not alive,” Drexel told Lauer this morning. Biker run to highlight search for missing NY teen
It's been a fruitless search for a New York teenager, Brittanee Drexel, who vanished while on spring break in Myrtle Beach in 2009. Now family and friends will return to the Grand Strand to bring new light to the case.
Contact was lost between Brittanee and her family in New York on April 25, the same night authorities say she disappeared from the area. The last signal from her cell phone came the next night near the South Santee River. Multiple search efforts since she went missing has left police empty handed.
Brittanee's family is organizing a biker run on April 24, 2010 stretching from Georgetown to the Blue Water Resort in Myrtle Beach where she was last seen. They also plan on holding a candlelight vigil at the Blue Water in honor of Brittanee.

Search for Brittanee continues, no new leads
The search continues for 17- year old Brittanee Drexel was last seen leaving a Myrtle Beach hotel in April, while vacationing from New York.
Her family and volunteers from the CUE center from Missing Persons are back in the Grand Strand searching for the teen. About 100 people showed up to help search the area near the North Santee River.
Though temperatures were just above freezing that didn't stop volunteers from spending the day searching for clues. The search party had ATV's, dogs, horses and of course, people. Everyone bundeled up and covered about 100 acres of land before lunch.
Brittanee's mom, Dawn Drexel says these searches are very nerve-racking, and that's why she says she didn't get much sleep. She says the possibilities are endless and at this point, it's just a waiting game, "the area that's out here is just all woods, and normally when they're looking in the woods they're looking for a body, it's just scary."
Even so, everyone is very hopeful including Brittanee's Grandma Carol Wagner, "I do [have hope] because they haven't found anything I really think Brittanee's out there. She's just untouchable right now." The family urges anyone with information to come forward, Wagner pleads,"please come forward, don't leave the family out in the cold."
The crews did not find any items that apply to Brittanee's case. They say they just the normal debris and some animal bones.
Wagner said, "I don't know where we are going from here, but we are not going to stop looking, we're going to continue to look for Brittanee, she's gotta be out there somewhere."

Search grows for Brittanee Drexel
On Saturday, search efforts for missing spring breaker Brittanee Drexel grew to levels not seen since the 18-year-old vanished from Ocean Boulevard in April.
More than 100 search volunteers and law enforcement officials combed through hundreds of wooded acres near the Georgetown/Charleston County line, though no signs of Drexel were found.
Efforts are focused on that area because it's where detectives tracked Drexel's cell phone signals in the first few days of her disappearance.
The searchers scoured much of the same area in April, though the heat, thick growth and active wildlife made conditions less than ideal.
Saturday morning's shot of crisp, cool air was just what searchers had hoped for this time around. The cadaver dogs, mounted horse patrols and searchers are able to work better in cooler weather, said Monica Caison with the CUE Center for Missing Persons.

Search for Brittanee Drexel delivers no new leads
Myrtle Beach police, FBI agents, and searchers with the CUE Center for Missing Persons wrapped up a search for missing teenager , Brittanee Drexel, Monday afternoon.
The areas searched on Monday had been investigated before, but they wanted to re-visit the area in the cooler weather as cooler temperatures are more advantageous for the search dogs to detect any clues. The areas searched include: Yaupon Drive near Kings Highway, 19th Ave. South off of Kings Highway, and the former Air Force Base in Myrtle Beach. They were able to eliminate these areas for any possible leads, as the search did not produce any new information.
The CUE Center plans another big search for Drexel this weekend (Oct. 17-18). No search is planned for the missing teen until then. They will be looking in the Myrtle Beach area and Georgetown County, places that have previously been searched.

Drexel, 18 on the 7th October, was last seen leaving the Blue Water Resort around 8:15 p.m. when surveillance video caught her walking out. Police say she was heading back to the Bar Harbour Hotel to meet up with friends.
Cpl. Vincent Dorio, says the case is being investigated daily and that leads come in weekly. "We're still actively going over every lead, reevaluating everything we've done to date to see if we've possibly missed something." "She's been missing this long. I was hoping to have discovered she was a runaway, but it doesn't look like that," Dorio said Wednesday afternoon, though he stressed, anything is possible at this point.

October marks the six-month anniversary since New York teen, Brittanee Drexel, vanished while on spring break in Myrtle Beach.
She was last seen in the area of 11th Avenue South and 20th Avenue South in Myrtle Beach on April 25 after meeting up with friends from her hometown. Myrtle Beach Police suspended an active search for Drexel in June, following several weeks of no progress in the case. Investigators extended their search as far as Charleston County, along the Santee River and Coastal Reserve.

17-year-old Brittanee Drexel was vacationing in Myrtle Beach back in April when she went missing.
Since her disappearance, Drexel's family has been helping to look for the teen by passing out flyers to businesses across the area and hitting local events, looking for tips on the teen's whereabouts.
Dealing with the pain, that no grandparent should have to face, Al and Carol Wagner packed their minivan Thursday, preparing to leave at the beginning of next week.
"It's gonna be hard to leave Brittanee behind," said Carol, with tears in her eyes.
"It's gonna be tough to leave here," explained Al.

"We left a piece behind. We're gonna pull through, but Brittanee, grandma and grandpa love you, so much, please, if anybody knows anything, please let us know," cried Carol.

“Somebody knows she got into a vehicle. Somebody must have seen her on the 25th, the day she went missing, between 8 at night or 9:30 because that last cell phone ping was in McClellanville. We just don’t know if somebody took the cell phone and threw it and took her in the opposite direction. We just don’t know where she is,“ said Wagner.
