Steven Newing was just 11 when he disappeared near his home in Fakenham, Norfolk on 2 September 1969 and Norfolk Police are making a fresh appeal. By using the 40th anniversary to jog memories of any potential witnesses they hope they might finally be able to uncover the truth.
Steven disappeared after leaving his home to visit a friend and his mother, Jean, contacted the police after he did not come home on time. Although officers made a thorough search of the local area no trace of Steven was found. There were thoughts at the time that he may have been abducted, that he may have run away or that he may even have fallen down a well but no evidence was found to substantiate these theories. Steven's home was searched twice just to ensure that he was not hiding there and officers say that they are sure his family was not involved in his disappearance.
Detective Inspector Andy Guy of the Norfolk Police cold case team said that the investigation could be solved if somebody with a guilty conscience came clean. He said: "There is somebody out there who was either involved or who suspects they know who was involved. They might have felt they were not able to come forward at the time but, after 40 years, feel the need to speak about it."
Anyone with information should contact the Norfolk Police cold case team on 01953 424548 or 0845 4564567.
