Amber's birthday party is a somber affair
There was cake, balloons and a picnic lunch.
But with the birthday girl missing for more than eight months, no one really expected a happy birthday.
Still, about 50 family members, friends and a handful of well-wishers from the community attended a celebration and prayer vigil at Escondido's Dixon Lake Recreation Area on Sunday to mark Amber Dubois' 15th birthday.
"Sitting at home at a time like this is the last thing we want to do," said Maurice Dubois, Amber's father.
Dubois said the company of others who care about his daughter was some comfort during the painful birthday milestone. And although she is missing, suspending the family's tradition of a party and cake on Amber's birthday might have been more painful, he said.

Thinking of Amber Dubois on her birthday
Teen found in New York is not Amber Dubois
ESCONDIDO - A teenage girl who responds to "Amber" and who mysteriously turned up in New York City two weeks ago is not Amber Dubois, the teen missing from Escondido since February, authorities said today.
The girl in New York is believed by social workers and doctors there to have a legitimate case of amnesia, and claims to have no memory of her family, home or even her own name. The coincidence prompted Escondido police to query New York police, and a watch commander today said detectives had determined that the girl in New York is not the missing Escondido teen.
Escondido police have interviewed more than 500 people, served more than 50 judicial subpoenas and followed up on more than 1,000 tips since 14-year-old Amber first went missing Feb. 13.
Amber Dubois' parents plan to reach out to the public again Sunday as they remember their daughter's birthday.

Vigil and picnic for Amber's birthday
The family of missing teen Amber Dubois is planning a vigil and picnic for Sunday 25/10/09, her 15th birthday.
Family members invite people to bring their own food and drinks or to bring food to share in a potluck lunch at the Dixon Lake Recreation Area. The lunch is planned for 1:30 p.m., with a lakeside vigil at 6 p.m. The picnic and vigil will be at shelters two and four.
Along with picnic areas and barbecues, people can fish, hike, throw horseshoes, use the playground or rent a boat, the family said. The Dixon Lake Recreation Area is at 1700 N. La Honda Drive in Escondido.

Missing-girl sightings hard for police - Amber Dubois
Oct. 20
The intensive police search for a missing California girl has police on an emotional roller coaster in light of the many leads they get, an officer said.
Police say they are inundated with information and sightings of Amber Dubois, 14, the Escondido, Calif., high school student who was last seen walking to school Feb. 13, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Monday.
"Talk about your coincidences. We thought for sure it was her," Escondido Police Lt. Bob Benton said of a girl they had tracked 700 miles away, whom they were all but certain was Amber. "That's been the toughest part in the emotional roller coaster of getting what we believe are very credible tips and that Amber would be coming home, to the realization that it's not her."

If you're in the United States and act fast, it can still arrive before October 25. If you're not, donations are welcome anyway.
Funds before birthday?
I understand the needs to get funds to help search & rescues....but what does getting funds ASAP before her 15th b-day have anything to do with? It's hard with times like these and the types of things that occur to not be skeptical...
Thoughts and prayers are with you
As a new mom, my biggest fear is, and probably always be, losing my child. My heart aches for your family, and Amber's safe return has been in my prayers. I myself, live only 20 or so minutes from your town, and hoping that the entire area can celebrate Amber's homecoming soon. I just wanted to let you know that those of us close to you are still keeping our eyes out for your little girl, and all praying for her return.
Amber's parents appear on Tyra Banks Show
Amber's mother, Carrie McGonigle, and father, Moe Dubois, appeared on the Tyra Banks Show in New York City, aired on 15/10/09, talking about their daughter, missing for eight months, and their search to find her.
Amber, 14, disappeared Feb.13, 2009 while walking to Escondido High School.
Police have classified her as an at-risk missing juvenile. They say there is not enough evidence to categorically say whether she was abducted or ran off.
A $100,000 reward is being offered for information — $50,000 for information leading to the girl's safe return and $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for her disappearance.
Anyone with information can call an anonymous tip line at (760) 743-8477.
upcoming birthday celebration
From Amber's site http://www.bringamberhome.com/
No candlelight vigil at the 8-month mark (October 13, 2009).
Instead, the family will hold a birthday celebration on Amber's birthday October 25, 2009. More details when available.
Amber
I have a suggestion. I keep seeing Ambers photo on the missing flyers. They show a very happy, nice young lady. If she has been abducted and held and some one happens to see her...this is not how she will appear. Find a photo of her not smiling with a blank or angry stare. Her hair has probably been bleached blond with possible dark roots or dyed black. Heavy dark eye makeup and pale skin and dark lipstick. The photo you are showing was only working when she was first taken. If there or no photos you have that can be doctored up...find someone to do a rendering of the different looks her captors have forced on her. I do feel she is alive, but not in a good situation. Stir the pot. Present a lot of different looks. Hopefully they will show them on Most Wanted. I have had this feeling from the beginning. I also feel you are good and loving parents. Prayers to you all.
Gov. Schwarzenegger offers state funds for info in Amber DuBois
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger offered $40,000 in state funds Thursday for information on the whereabouts of a teenage North County girl who has been missing for seven months, bringing the total reward amount to $100,000.
The additional incentive for public help in solving 14-year-old Amber DuBois’ disappearance was requested by Escondido Police Chief Jim Maher.
The teen was last seen walking to school on Feb. 13. Detectives and volunteer searchers have so far turned up no solid leads about what became of the Escondido High freshman, described by her family as studious, well-behaved, with no history of running away.

Amber's family says Escondido detectives have 'dropped the ball'
"Our daughter is not getting what she needs to be recovered" said Amber's father Moe Dubois at a Sunday prayer vigil at Escondido High School, where the 14-year-old was last seen before school on Feb. 13.
It was the first time the family has expressed public frustration with Escondido police.
Police spokesman Lt. Bob Benton responded that Escondido had launched "One of the most extensive investigations our department has handled," with the help of several outside agencies.
He said that two investigators still worked on the case full time, and that several agencies, including the Sheriff's Department, the FBI and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, had joined the search.
However, Moe Dubois said Sunday that police had, "dropped the ball," with he and ex-wife Carrie McGonigle, Amber's mother, citing several alleged delays that may have hurt Amber's chances of being found.

7-month vigil
It's been 7 months since Amber vanished into thin air as she walked from her home to Escondido High School. There will be a vigil on Sunday, September 13, 2009, at 7:30 PM at Escondido High School, 1535 N. Broadway, Escondido.
If you are too far away to attend, you can hold your own private vigil at home. Light a candle, and watch the light of love spread out into the air in all directions and reach all the world. No matter where Amber is, your love will reach her.

clue about where to look
Here's a site that points out what kinds of places to search for.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32583149/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/
It's about an 11-year-old girl abducted from her school bus stop by a sex offender in 1991 and held captive in a very-well-camouflaged backyard compound for 18 years before being found alive by police. Incidentally, the compound was 170 miles from the girl's home, so likewise there is a good chance that Amber is nowhere near Escondido.

No breaks in missing teen case
The dogs, said by their handlers to be able to track the scent of a person missing for weeks or even months, are part of VK9 Scent Specific Search Recovery of Brewer, Maine.
Escondido police Lt. Craig Carter said Friday morning that a police canine officer was shadowing the dogs, Quincy, a Labrador retriever, and Jack, a German short haired pointer, and their handlers.
Carter said, however, there was nothing significant to report at that time. He could not be reached Friday afternoon.

Dog teams join search for missing teen Amber Dubois
ESCONDIDO – Two specialized dog teams based in Virginia are in the North County this morning to renew a search for missing teenager Amber Dubois who vanished more than six months ago.
The 14-year-old was last seen Feb. 13 about 7:10 a.m. while walking to Escondido High School with a tall teenager who has never been identified. Despite widespread publicity and numerous searches, no trace of the girl has been found.
The dogs belong to the VK9 Scent Specific Search and Recovery Unit, a nonprofit organization, said Sarah Platts who is the officer in charge of the group. They arrived with their handlers at Lindbergh Field about 10 p.m. Tuesday.

No good leads in case of missing 14-year-old
Six months ago today, 14-year-old Amber Dubois disappeared while walking to Escondido High School.
There has been no break in the case, and no lead that has proved fruitful since she vanished Feb. 13, seemingly without a trace.
“We're really frustrated,” said Amber's father, Maurice Dubois. “Every day gets tougher and tougher. I would never, ever have imagined us getting to a six-month point.”
Escondido police have asked the Governor's Office for $40,000 from a special fund set up for missing-persons cases to add to a reward that sits now at $60,000 for information.
Police and Amber's family hope that the increased reward will shake something loose. Someone knows what happened to her.

Missing teen's family pushes forward six months later
Six months after Amber Dubois disappeared, pictures of the bookish, blue-eyed 14-year-old are still posted across Escondido and across Southern California.
Banners reading "Help Us Find Amber" still line fences along North Broadway near Escondido High School. Her name is still part of the family's answering machine greeting at their home, just a few blocks from the campus.
Amber was last seen Feb. 13 walking to school. No trace of how or why she disappeared has been found.
Her family, despite a tortured spring and summer of searches that turned up nothing, has not given up hope. It recently hired a new private investigator and will fly in specialized search dogs from Maine later this month.

Distraught father writes letter to missing teen
Late Saturday night, with Father's Day just hours away, Moe Dubois sat down to write a letter to his daughter ---- missing teen Amber Dubois.
His grief and melancholy would not stay inside any longer.
"I just had to air out my feelings somewhere," Dubois said of the letter, which he sent to local news outlets Sunday. "I needed to get it out."
In the letter, Dubois expressed his deep sadness and also his hope that he'll be reunited with his 14-year-old daughter who vanished on her way to school in Escondido more than four months ago.
"I hope you can stay strong and have faith that someday, someday very soon, we find you and get you home," Dubois wrote. "I promise you that your family will never stop looking for you until you are found."

Family Shift Tactics - Amber Dubois
Missing teen's family pushes on after closing volunteer center
The parents of a California teen who disappeared on her way to school in February have closed the center that was the staging ground for search efforts, citing a lack of volunteers and a shift in direction.
But the parents of 14-year-old Amber DuBois say the search will continue with a small group of dedicated volunteers.
"We're absolutely going to keep going. Anyone who wants to volunteer can log onto Amber's site (http://www.bringamberhome.com/) and see where we're going to meet," Amber's father, Maurice DuBois, said.
The decision to close the center -- a nondescript, 7,500-square foot building donated by an Escondido businessman -- did not come easily.
"I don't want people to have the impression that we're giving up. I'm scared that the fact we're closing will make people stop volunteering, but we still need them because we won't stop looking until we find her," DuBois said.

Vigil is set for missing girl, 14 - Amber Dubois
It will be four months tomorrow since 14-year-old Amber Dubois went missing while walking to school in Escondido, and a search center established shortly after she disappeared is closing down.
Every weekend volunteers have been scouring nearby hills for any sign of the teen, without success. The number of volunteers has dwindled to a point that only about 20 people have been showing up to help.
Amber's mother, Carrie McGonigle, said that the center will close this weekend and that future search efforts will concentrate on distributing fliers in Riverside and Orange counties.
